Catherine and Jack met through work at Verkada, though their story really started before they officially met. A few mutual friends had been telling Catherine that Jack thought she was cute, and she had already started referring to him as her “work crush.”

Around that time, they both found out they’d be going on the same work ski trip to Lake Tahoe. Without knowing much about each other yet, they were both telling their friends they were hoping to meet that weekend.

The night before the trip, Jack walked by Catherine and her friend Courtney, who were sitting outside Macondray — what would later become their favorite bar, and the same place they would later say “I love you” for the first time. Catherine was talking loudly about her cute coworker Jack, while at the same time, Jack was walking by with his mom, who was in town watching Boots, and told her that Catherine was the girl he was hoping to see that weekend. Luckily, neither of them heard the other.

They met that weekend and pretty much spent the rest of the trip together. Catherine made the first move in Tahoe, and Jack fully committed early on, ordering the same weird purple kombucha she was drinking.

The following Monday, Jack didn’t waste any time. He walked over to Catherine at work and asked if she wanted to take his dog, Boots, for a walk to Lafayette Park and watch the sunset. They grabbed a couple of beers, found a spot in the park, and ended up talking for hours, long after the sun had set and it was completely dark.

One of their first dates was a trip up to Point Reyes, which ended up being a pretty special date since they got engaged there a few years later. From that point on, they were inseparable, spending time together every day.
